For a small island, St. Martin/St. Maarten is surprisingly well equipped for this activity. With four establishments open to vacationers and residents alike, there is bound to be a ride suitable for you. Two 'ranches' are located on the Dutch side. The St. Maarten Riding School for those who want to take beginner lessons or brush up on existing skills, and Lucky Stables for varied trail rides, including Champagne Full Moon rides for the romantic - or brave!
On the French side, OK Coral offers riding along white sand beaches, and trails which lead from Oyster Pond to Orient Bay - recommended for those with a little more experience as only 'English' saddles are available and there is a fair amount of galloping on the beach!
For a comprehensive introduction to horseback riding, Bayside Riding Club located at 'Le Gallion', offers everything from pony rides for small children to high level dressage, show jumping and 'voltige' or equestrian vaulting. The one hour and two hour beach rides take you through one of St. Martin's protected nature reserves, on scenic beach trails and one and a half miles of white sand beach. The two-hour ride also includes swimming bareback on your horse in the Atlantic Ocean! Both Western and English saddles are available and the friendly guides speak both French and English. For experienced riders, private rides are available upon request - if you fancy 35 miles per hour, on one of the island's most beautiful, untouched beaches!
