Gingerbread Cafe — Belair Beach Hotel's Beachfront Restaurant

Most beach restaurants on Sint Maarten are either cruise ship targets or hotel amenities that barely acknowledge the outside world. The Gingerbread Cafe is neither. It sits directly on Little Bay Beach at the Belair Beach Hotel — open to guests and the public alike, from 8 in the morning until 10 at night, seven days a week.

Little Bay is a sheltered crescent on the Dutch side, just three minutes from Philipsburg but well outside the cruise ship footprint. From the open-air dining area, the view stretches across the Caribbean toward Saba, Sint Eustatius, and St. Kitts on a clear morning. Cruise ships bound for Philipsburg pass in full view. The sound arriving with breakfast is the sea, not traffic.

The regular menu covers steaks, fresh fish, and Caribbean lobster. The kitchen is serious enough about the weekly specials that advance reservations are recommended for Monday nights, when the all-you-can-eat BBQ — featuring the cafe's signature ribs and house sauce — typically sells out early.

Weekly specials:

• Monday — All-you-can-eat BBQ with signature ribs and sauce. Starts at 7pm. Book ahead.
• Wednesday — Lobster Night with DJ Rass
• Friday — Surf and Turf (Caribbean lobster and filet mignon) or rack of lamb, with Addy Richardson performing classic oldies

Happy hour runs a generous three hours daily from 3pm to 6pm at the fully stocked bar.
