Rental Car Seat Hygiene in St. Maarten — What Nobody Talks About

Sometimes ignorance is bliss. But once the thought occurs to you, there is no going back.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss, and it is better not to think observations through. Such is the case when you notice rental cars full of happy vacationers returning from a day on one of our hot tropical beaches. Males especially don't seem to have a problem driving shirtless, rubbing their sweaty backs on cloth car seats, which soak up a mixture of body fluids and sunscreen chemicals.

Better to not think much more about it. But too late. Your mind is already on rails in a direction where there are no happy conclusions. Because now you start wondering about the hygiene of rental car seats — if, and how often, rental car operators are shampooing the upholstery.

If the average rental car seat is not cleaned between renters, simple math tells us that this is the equivalent of staying in a hotel bed where the sheets were not changed for up to one hundred guests. The shirtless drivers don't seem sensitive to this issue — but what about others? About people like you, who are reading these words right now? And is there a difference in how rental companies handle this hygiene question?

What We Found When We Asked

We talked to several rental car providers on Sint Maarten and learned that seat cleaning is handled very differently across the market.

It turns out that the leading professional equipment of German manufacturer Kärcher is not available as a 115-volt model for the US market — which in this case also affects the Dutch side of Sint Maarten. These expensive machines thoroughly deep-clean cloth upholstery with hot liquids and chemicals, leaving no germs or foreign substances behind. The top car rental operators of the French Caribbean — Guadeloupe and Martinique — use such machines as standard. The Dutch side cannot, due to the voltage difference.

115-volt substitutes for Kärcher units are available, and some local providers use them. Sometimes only after a seat is visibly soiled. Sometimes on a monthly schedule. There are employees of world-renowned international brands who inform us they have never seen a seat shampooed or deep-cleaned. Ever. And then there are companies that clean seats every week — and it is precisely these operators who are also working to replace cloth seats with leather or vinyl across their fleets, for hygiene reasons, as the market gradually accepts the slightly higher rental cost.

Small local rental car providers handle cleaning very differently. Some are highly conscientious and make every effort to keep cars in excellent condition, including sanitizing between rentals. Others do not. It comes down almost entirely to the personal standards of the owner.

One consistent finding: cars frequently rented to cruise ship passengers have the highest level of contamination. These vehicles are used for only a few hours per renter, almost always include a stop at a beach, and the passenger continues their island tour in a wet bathing suit with sandy feet. High turnover, short rentals, beach stops — the worst possible combination for upholstery hygiene.

What This Means for You as a Renter

Competitive rental car rates have reached a point where companies have little room to provide additional services. If you go for the absolute lowest rate available, do not expect that every hygiene sensitivity will be addressed.

If you pay a few dollars more per day above the minimum rate, you can also ask — and reasonably expect — acceptable cleanliness. The companies that invest in proper cleaning equipment are generally also the companies that price slightly above the floor. That premium exists for a reason.

The St-Maarten.com Standard

Before publishing any article that addresses a service challenge, St-Maarten.com verifies that the companies listed and recommended on this portal are not part of the problem described.

Rental car providers listed on St-Maarten.com — including Leisure Car Rental, our six-time World Travel Award winner at Princess Juliana Airport — meet a reasonable standard of vehicle cleanliness. That is part of what Publisher Verification means on this site.
