Why St Maarten's Sand Won't Burn Your Feet
White sand beaches, stretching for kilometers, a towel on the ground to lie down and catch some rays, a relaxed walk to the shoreline to take a cooling swim — that's how I love my St Maarten - St Martin beach.
Business brought me to our neighboring island of St Kitts. And after a few full days of meetings, I decided a little beach time was needed. I went to Cockleshell Bay Beach, at the end of the Southern Peninsula.
I left my flip-flops in the car, took a towel, and had planned to stretch out. What was supposed to be an elegant drop became a hasty belly landing on the towel. The heat! My feet were on fire, and even under the towel, I could feel the heat stored in the sand — no way to make it to the water without flip-flops.
While thinking about a technique to be mobile without protection, I remembered my days in Miami Beach. Same problem: the sand got super heated in the tropical sun.
How could the beaches of St Maarten be so different from St Kitts and Florida?
There are two kinds of sand: one is made of shells grinding for eons until they are fine particles; the other is based on silica, which stores heat.
Coral sand — which is really what most of St Maarten's beaches are made of — isn't sand in the geological sense at all. It's the ground-up remains of coral, shells, and calcified marine skeletons, built from calcium carbonate. Silica sand, the kind that dominates Florida and much of the Eastern Caribbean's volcanic islands like St Kitts, is essentially finely crushed quartz — and quartz is remarkably good at soaking up and holding heat.
Coral sand does the opposite. Its particles are lighter in color, more reflective, and shaped differently under a microscope — irregular, porous, full of tiny air pockets from what was once living coral structure. That texture doesn't just look different underfoot; it behaves differently in the sun. Instead of absorbing heat like a dark stone driveway, it bounces most of it straight back up, and what little it does hold escapes quickly through all that internal air space.
It's the same reason a black car seat scorches you in July and a white one barely warms up. St Maarten's beaches are, in a very literal sense, wearing white.
Nobody puts that on a postcard. But it's the difference between a beach day that ends the moment your flip-flops disappear under a towel, and one where the whole stretch of sand — end to end, no shoes required — is simply yours to walk.
