For over a decade S/Y Random Wind has been showing visitors and residents some of the amazing things St. Maarten/St-Martin has to offer.
Originally the Random Wind opened in 1998 on SXM. In 2007 Diane Morano Smith purchased the boat and company with the intention of running a charter company for a few years and then traveling the globe.
“We lived in South Carolina and relocated to SXM when we bought the business. We planned on running the business for 3 years and then sailing around the world with our children Nathan and Caroline,” Diane stated.
Like so many others, once Smith arrived she found out that this island has something special that makes it hard to leave.
The boat and the company quickly became one of the top-rated tours on the island. With some guests returning year after year; thanks in large part to the friendly and accommodating crew, the amazing on-board lunch, fabulous snorkel and beach stops, and (of course) the island’s only Tarzan Swing!
After the original S/Y Random Wind sank in Hurricane Irma, Smith decided to have faith in the ability of the island to recover. In January of 2018 she purchased a 52ft catamaran called Camille.
“(After the storm) was a difficult time for certain. For many others more so than myself. That is a big reason I came back. I know so many people; friends, business acquaintances, and customers turned friends. Anywhere else wouldn’t be the same St. Maarten/St-Martin is a special place,” said Smith.
After her refit and damage repair the new catamaran offers space for up to 37 guests on board, though the crew limits this number to ensure that everyone is comfortable for the day.
The Paradise Day Sail is an amazing way to experience the island from the sea. Departing at 10AM, guests can expect a relaxing day in the sun while being pampered by the crew.
As soon as the boat takes off drinks are served and you head out for a snorkel/beach stop based on the sea conditions. At the first location paddle boards and kayaks are available for use, and at your second stop it’s time to give the Tarzan Swing a try. Whether you play it safe and just let yourself drop into the crystal blue water, or you attempt Diane’s signature back flip into the sea; you have to give it a go!
The crew on board will prepare an amazing lunch, which is much anticipated after an amazing morning on and in the water. Then as you cruise back to Philipsburg you will be able to relax in on the comfortable deck enjoying the view of the island.
One of the main things that sets the Random Wind apart from other sailing tours in the Caribbean is the amazing staff. Most often on board are Captain Luuke Soeters and his wife Darcy, who both joined the boat upon reopening, and Manager and First Mate- Anna Holness.
“Anna has been with us for years, she was on the original boat and stayed to help get the new boat ready. She is an amazing person, so great with people, and truly a beautiful soul. The captain Luuke, came on in 2018 once the new boat was sorted. His wife, Darcy, is also a hostess and together they are a great team. I am grateful for all of them,” says Smith.
This company is one to keep your eye on as Smith plans to expand the business when possible and offer even more to her guests. To experience the amazing day onboard the Random Wind for yourself you can visit their website at randomwind.com to send a reservation request or contact form.
