Cole Bay — The Island's Commercial Heart

regions Apr 17, 2026

Cole Bay is not a tourist destination in the conventional sense. There are no beaches, no beach bars, and no resort strips. What it has instead is the most concentrated commercial activity on the island — the marine industry, the lagoon waterfront, the island's most glamorous casino, a growing upscale retail strip, and a resort complex that has anchored the area's entertainment offer for decades. Visitors who never venture past Simpson Bay and Philipsburg are missing a significant part of how Sint Maarten actually functions.

The name Cole Bay derives from the Dutch Koolbaai — kool meaning cabbage in Dutch, a reference to the area's agricultural past that bears no resemblance to its present reality.

Geography and Access

Cole Bay begins immediately east of the Simpson Bay Bridge and runs along the southern shore of Simpson Bay Lagoon toward the French border. A causeway connects Simpson Bay directly to the northwestern part of Cole Bay, cutting commuting times significantly and relieving the chronic traffic that once made the area frustrating to reach. From Maho or Simpson Bay, Port de Plaisance — the area's main resort complex — is now just minutes away.

The Marine Industry

The lagoon waterfront of Cole Bay is the working heart of the island's yachting industry. Major chandleries including Island Waterworld and Budget Marine have established here, alongside a wide range of boat yards, repair facilities, and marine service operations. Sint Maarten — and Cole Bay specifically — has become the number one location for yacht work in the entire Antilles, a position built on decades of investment in facilities, skills, and supply chains that no other island in the region can match at this scale.

Lagoonies

On the waterfront at Lagoonies Marina, Lagoonies restaurant and bar has long been the unofficial headquarters of the world cruising community on Sint Maarten — a gathering point for sailors arriving from or departing for ocean crossings. Constant live entertainment, strong food, and a genuinely international clientele have given it a reputation that extends well beyond the sailing community. It is one of the more reliably entertaining restaurants on the Dutch side.

Port de Plaisance

Port de Plaisance is the area's dominant resort complex, positioned near the French border. Parts of the property remain under renovation, but the resort is open and operating. It is home to a major superyacht marina — one of the more prestigious berths on the island — and a cluster of restaurants that make it a dining destination in its own right. Catch 21, Melange, Mandarin, and Papermoon are all on the property, covering a range from casual to fine dining. The Princess Casino within the complex remains Sint Maarten's most glamorous gaming establishment — larger in scale and more refined in atmosphere than the island's other casino options.

The Country Club at Port de Plaisance is one of the island's better wellness and fitness facilities, with several tennis courts, a spa, a large swimming pool, and a gym that operates at a level unusual for a Caribbean island. Recent additions to the sports facilities include Padel courts and Pickleball courts — Padel in particular has been one of the fastest-growing racket sports in Europe and among the Caribbean's resident European community. Short-term memberships are available.

The Vegas Casino

Immediately adjacent to Port de Plaisance, a large new casino has opened that brings a Las Vegas-style entertainment concept to Sint Maarten. It is thriving — and with four restaurants on the premises, it functions as a complete evening destination rather than just a gaming floor. Together with the Princess Casino next door, Cole Bay now has the most concentrated casino and dining offer outside of Simpson Bay.

The New Retail Strip

Across the street from Port de Plaisance and the Vegas Casino, several new shopping centers have opened, carrying upscale brands — a retail offer that did not exist in this part of the island until recently. A major new shopping mall in the area is in advanced stages of development and expected to open in the near future. When it does, Cole Bay's commercial character will shift again — adding destination retail to an area that already has marine services, casinos, dining, and fitness under one concentrated strip.

Practical Shopping — Beyond Tourism

Cole Bay serves a side of Sint Maarten that most visitor guides ignore entirely: the island's permanent and long-term resident population. A full-size ACE Home Improvement store — comparable in scale to its US counterparts — handles hardware, tools, and building supplies at a level the island previously had to import from elsewhere. Across the street, a large Ashley Furniture showroom serves the villa and condominium market that has grown substantially across the Dutch side. Next to the Vegas Casino, a Carrefour supermarket carries an unusually comprehensive grocery range — US products, European imports, and Caribbean staples under one roof. For visitors in self-catering accommodation, this is the most complete grocery option on the Dutch side.

Cole Bay is also the island's automotive hub. Motorworld is the dominant dealership, carrying a wide range of brands including Audi, Volkswagen, Ford, and Hyundai, among others — a full-scale operation that would not look out of place in any mid-sized American or European city. A full-size NAPA Auto Parts store serves the island's mechanics, boat owners, and DIY community. Several other car dealerships operate in the area, making Cole Bay the obvious destination for anyone in the market for a vehicle on the island.

Carl's Unique Inn

Above Carl's Unique Bakery in Cole Bay, Carl's Unique Inn offers guesthouse accommodation that punches well above the category. The rooms are good-sized and fully equipped — comparable to a proper hotel in comfort and amenities, at guesthouse pricing. It is one of the more practical accommodation options on the Dutch side for visitors who prioritize value and convenience over resort amenities — equally suitable for vacationers and business travelers. Waking up above a bakery has its own obvious advantage.

Almond Grove — Views and Short-Term Rentals

On the hillside above Cole Bay, the gated community of Almond Grove offers some of the most striking views on the Dutch side. Villas and apartments look out simultaneously over Simpson Bay Lagoon, Princess Juliana International Airport, and the Caribbean Sea — a panorama that is difficult to match anywhere on the island. The community has become a significant source of Airbnb and short-term rental inventory, offering visitors a quieter residential alternative to the resort areas below, with the full commercial offer of Cole Bay immediately accessible by car.

Getting There — by Car

Cole Bay is best reached via the causeway from Simpson Bay, approximately 10 minutes from the airport. The French border is immediately adjacent at the western end of the strip.
