Indigo Bay — Sint Maarten's Most Secluded Beach and a Five-Star Future

beaches Apr 15, 2026

Indigo Bay was previously known as Cay Bay — worth noting if you try to locate it on Google Maps, which may still use the old name. The complete valley is in the hands of an ecology-conscious developer who has been carefully building quality homes along the slopes over many years while preserving the natural character of the bay. A testament to the quality of the construction: the area sustained no significant damage during Hurricane Irma in September 2017, when much of the island around it was badly affected.

The bay's transformation is more dramatic than most visitors realize. Under its old name, Cay Bay was a gloomy, uninviting cove — dark rocks, no sand, nothing that suggested a beach destination. The beach that exists today is artificial, created as part of the development. It looks entirely natural and is genuinely attractive. The valley and the ecology were always there; the beach was built.

The result is one of the most secluded and attractive beaches on the Dutch side — off the beaten path of the island's main tourist circuit, with a quality that rewards visitors who make the effort to find it.

The Beach and the Indigo Beach Restaurant

The beach itself is a genuinely beautiful Caribbean cove — calm water, fine sand, and the steep green valley rising behind it. The Indigo Beach Restaurant has been the anchor of the bay for years, offering fine food, good drinks, and a serious wine list in a beach setting. It is one of the better beach dining experiences on the Dutch side precisely because it is not on the main tourist route.

Vie L'Ven — Coming in 2028

The character of Indigo Bay is about to change significantly — and in a direction that will place it among the most prestigious resort addresses in the Caribbean.

Vie L'Ven is a luxury resort and private residences development by Altree Developments of Toronto, currently under construction on Indigo Bay Boulevard alongside a conservation area. The project comprises 190 hotel rooms and 90 private residences. Architecture is by HKS; interiors by Studio Munge, with a design influenced by both the Dutch and French heritage of the island. The expected opening is 2028.

The resort will feature three restaurants, a spa, a fitness center, a beach club, a private dock, and watersports facilities. Boat access is part of the concept.

The food and beverage program is being developed in partnership with Alain Ducasse — the most decorated chef in the world, holder of more Michelin stars than any other living chef, and one of the definitive names in luxury hospitality. A Ducasse restaurant on Sint Maarten is not a minor addition to the island's dining scene. It is a statement about where Indigo Bay is headed.

The resort will be a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Real estate sales are handled by St. Martin Sotheby's International Realty.

What This Means for the Island

Sint Maarten already has a strong case as a Caribbean destination. Vie L'Ven adds a dimension the island has not previously had — a purpose-built ultra-luxury resort with internationally recognized culinary and hospitality credentials, in a naturally protected bay that survived a category 5 hurricane intact.

For visitors planning ahead, Indigo Bay is worth knowing about now. For investors, the private residences are available through Sotheby's. For the island as a whole, this is one of the more significant hospitality developments in a generation.
