Little Bay Beach St Maarten

Little Bay Beach has coarse sand, but the snorkeling on the rocks is genuinely great

Little Bay Beach — A Sheltered Cove Near Philipsburg

beaches Apr 15, 2026

Little Bay is a small, well-protected cove on the southern coast of Sint Maarten, tucked just around the headland from Great Bay and Philipsburg. The outcrop of Fort Amsterdam provides natural shelter from the sea, keeping the water calm and making the bay suitable for children and non-swimmers. Snorkeling excursions regularly use the rocky edges of the cove for their first water entry.

An honest note on the sand: it is gray and coarser than the white sand beaches the island is known for. Little Bay is not a beach you visit for the sand quality. It is a beach you visit for calm water, convenience to Philipsburg, and the facilities that the two hotels provide.

The Hotels

Two properties occupy the bay. The Belair Beach Hotel is a long-established, family-friendly operation directly on the water — one of the more affordable hotel options on the Dutch side, with a relaxed atmosphere and direct beach access. The Divi Little Bay Beach Resort is a larger, more upscale property at the other end of the cove, with more extensive amenities.

Both hotels welcome non-guests to the beach, and a beach restaurant serves snacks, full meals, and the essential beach cocktails.

Watersports

The protected nature of the cove and its generally calm conditions make it one of the more practical spots on the Dutch side for watersports. Snorkeling gear, jet-skis, and other equipment are available for rental. For a proper beach dive — a rarity on Sint Maarten — Little Bay's calm, accessible water makes it one of the few practical options.

A Practical Note on Free Beach Access

The Divi Little Bay Resort offers free beach access, chairs, and amenities to day visitors who attend a timeshare presentation at the property. For visitors who have read our guide to timeshare presentations and understand what they are agreeing to, this can be a reasonable trade — ninety minutes of your time in exchange for a full beach day with facilities included. Go in with clear expectations and it is a straightforward transaction.

Location and Honest Context

Little Bay is about five minutes by car from the center of Philipsburg. Cruise passengers looking for a beach close to the capital are better served by Great Bay — it is larger, the sand is white, and it is within walking distance of Front Street. Little Bay is primarily a beach for guests of the Belair Beach Hotel and the Divi Little Bay Resort. The calm, protected water and the watersports facilities make it a functional beach for those staying here. As a destination beach, it is not among the island's strongest options — the sand quality alone places it on our worst beaches list. But for hotel guests who want calm water and easy access, it serves its purpose well.
