Beacon Hill — Sint Maarten's Narrow Peninsula

regions May 1, 2026

Beacon Hill is technically part of Simpson Bay, but functions as an entirely separate neighborhood — a narrow peninsula jutting into the sea between Simpson Bay and the Caribbean, connected to the rest of Sint Maarten by a single road that runs behind the airport runway alongside Maho Beach. At its narrowest point, the peninsula is just 42 meters wide. On one side is Simpson Bay, on the other the Caribbean Sea, and in between a strip of beautiful homes, apartment buildings, beach bars, and one of the island's most visited tourist attractions.

The access road is the same one that becomes impassable on cruise ship days, when thousands of passengers walk or are bussed to Maho Beach to watch the planes. Visitors planning a trip to Beacon Hill on a cruise ship day should factor in the traffic reality.

The Sunset, Sandbar, and Morgan Resort Complex

At the very start of Beacon Hill — address: 2 Beacon Hill Road — a single entrance leads into a shared parking lot that serves what is effectively one large beach and resort complex: Sunset Beach Bar, the Sandbar, a cluster of smaller associated businesses, and the Morgan Resort & Spa. Sunset and the Sandbar sit shoulder to shoulder and share offices — they are operated together under the same ownership. The Morgan Resort is the major institutional anchor of the complex.

The Morgan Resort & Spa is a full-service luxury resort with multiple room categories, an infinity pool, and a spa. The resort has no proper beach. A small area of landfill sand on the property creates a beach aesthetic and appears in marketing visuals, but it does not lead into the sea. In practice, Morgan guests use Maho Beach, which begins directly at the 2 Beacon Hill Road entrance. The Maho Village entertainment district — Casino Royale, the restaurants Jax, Roma, The Deli, and Mr. Chow, shops, and the pharmacy — is a 300-meter walk further along the road. One room category — the King Runway View — sells the plane-spotting experience as an amenity in its own right, with a private balcony facing the Princess Juliana Airport runway directly. Salt, the Morgan's upscale restaurant, operates at a level well above the beach bar category and is worth a dinner reservation regardless of whether you are staying at the resort.

Sunset Beach Bar is the island's most polished plane-spotting venue. It is a tourist trap in the most literal sense — it exists to capture the plane-spotting crowd and extract maximum value from the experience. But it is a beautifully executed one. The complex has grown into a multi-venue destination: a swimming pool, multiple restaurants including a pastry shop, and several retail shops carrying beachwear and souvenirs. The flight schedule is posted, the sightlines are perfect, and the atmosphere is exactly what visitors come for. Go in knowing what it is and you will enjoy it. Just be aware that the staff is dealing with guests they will never see again — and the service reflects that reality.

The Sandbar is a different proposition entirely. Built around a tiny natural cove with a 23-meter beach called Secret Beach, it is genuinely popular with locals — one of the few beach bar operations on the Dutch side that draws island residents as regulars rather than just tourists. The staff knows its repeat customers, and the service quality reflects that relationship in ways that its neighbor cannot match. The kitchen produces proper food, Happy Hour runs from 2 PM to 3 PM with two drinks for the price of one, and live entertainment runs into the evening. For families, the Sandbar offers something rare on Sint Maarten: a secure, well-equipped playground next to a calm cove — calm enough for small children, with parents able to sit a few meters away with a drink and a clear view.

D's Beach Bar and Grill

At the far end of Beacon Hill, D's Beach Bar and Grill sits on the calmest section of Simpson Bay Beach — protected water, consistent conditions, and a professional operation that covers food, entertainment, beach lounges, and a dedicated plane-spotting platform. It draws a more local crowd than the Sunset end of the peninsula and is a reliable option for a full beach day away from the cruise passenger circuit.

The Residential Side

Beyond the beach bars and the resort, Beacon Hill is primarily a residential neighborhood — homes and apartment buildings taking advantage of the peninsula's unusual geography and the views it provides over both Simpson Bay and the Caribbean. It is one of the quieter residential addresses on the Dutch side, despite being minutes from the airport and Maho's entertainment strip.
